Canton Fair October 2026: Which Phase to Visit and How to Spot a Real Factory

9 min 28

The organizers of the 140th Canton Fair announced on 22 September that the session opens on 15 October in Guangzhou. More than 220,000 overseas buyers from 197 countries and regions have already pre-registered, and more than 32,000 companies will exhibit. If you already import from China, the Canton Fair October 2026 session is not a discovery trip. It is three weeks of booths where a factory and a trading company look identical. Therefore, the work that matters happens before you land and after you leave.

Three things make this edition different from the last one you walked. First, the calendar. The Mid-Autumn Festival and Golden Week fall back to back right before the opening, so Chinese plants have only three working days left. Second, the duty picture at destination has moved, at least for buyers shipping to Mexico. Third, the Trump-Xi summit on 24 September will set the mood under which you sign every quotation from the fair.

Which Canton Fair October 2026 phase matches your product list?

It depends on your product list, because the 140th session runs from 15 October to 4 November across 1.55 million square metres, split into three phases with separate product maps. The official introduction that the Chinese consulate in Cebu posted in July lays out the split as follows:

Phase Dates Product groups
Phase 1 15 to 19 October Advanced manufacturing, home appliances, consumer electronics, industrial automation, machinery, vehicles, new energy, hardware, tools and service robots
Phase 2 23 to 27 October Ceramics, kitchenware, home decoration, gifts, furniture, fashion jewellery and building materials
Phase 3 31 October to 4 November Toys, baby and children’s products, apparel, textiles, food, medicines and health products

Two consequences follow. First, if your catalogue spans electronics and home goods, you need two trips or one long stay. Phase 1 and Phase 2 do not overlap. Second, the gaps between phases, 20 to 22 October and 28 to 30 October, are the natural slots for plant visits in Guangdong. Those are the days when a booth conversation turns into a factory gate.

Golden Week comes first: what to close before 30 September

The official 2026 schedule from the General Office of the State Council places the Mid-Autumn Festival from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 September. Golden Week then runs from Thursday 1 to Wednesday 7 October, with make-up working days on Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October.

Put those dates together and the picture is tight. Between the two holidays there are only three working days, 28 to 30 September. Plants reopen on 8 October and the fair opens one week later. In other words, if you want confirmed appointments, updated quotations or samples before the Canton Fair October 2026 opening, request them this week. After that, suppliers are either on holiday or busy building their booths.

Use the same window for your own paperwork. New buyers can pre-register on the official site and collect a free badge at airports, railway stations or the Hong Kong office. Meanwhile, set up the organizers’ booth-level AI navigation before you fly.

Factory or trading company: what should you check at the booth?

Check documents and follow-up, not the pitch: that is where the difference shows up, because both a manufacturer and a reseller will say factory. The organizers say more than 11,000 exhibitors hold SRDI or industry champion recognition, and 64% apply industrial internet and AI. Those are useful signals. However, they do not answer the question you actually care about: is the person in front of you a manufacturer or a reseller?

At Canton Fair October 2026, ask every shortlisted exhibitor for three things and write down the answers:

  • The business licence and its registered scope. A manufacturer’s scope includes production of your product category. A scope limited to trade or sales points to an intermediary.
  • Certificates that match the company name. An ISO certificate under a different legal entity means the exhibitor is showing someone else’s paperwork. Ask who owns the plant.
  • The plant address, not the office. Then ask whether you can visit next week. A real factory says yes and names a contact. A reseller hesitates, or offers a partner plant.

None of this replaces a plant audit. Still, it filters out most resellers before you spend a day on the road. Being a trading company is not fraud. The problem is paying a factory-direct margin to someone who is not the factory, and finding out when a quality claim has nobody to land on.

Tariffs, the summit and why a fixed price is the wrong souvenir

The fair opens three weeks after the Trump-Xi summit in Washington, which CSIS dates to 24 September. According to Euronews, China expects to announce roughly 30 billion dollars in tariff-free or low-tariff imports in exchange for meeting its May purchase commitments. Whatever comes out of that meeting will shape how exhibitors quote. Therefore, instead of closing a fixed unit price at the booth, agree a price with a written review clause tied to duty changes. Add a validity period to every quotation you collect at Canton Fair October 2026. A supplier who refuses any adjustment mechanism is telling you something too.

Mexican buyers have an extra layer. Expansión reported on 22 September, citing the Subsecretaría de Comercio Exterior, that Mexico raised duties on 1,463 tariff lines in 2026. Imports of the affected products from China fell 26.3% between the first halves of 2025 and 2026, from 12,033 to 8,869 million dollars. The average applied MFN tariff rose from 8.5% to 11.1%. Moreover, the ceiling Mexico bound at the WTO sits at 36.2%, so there is room for more.

With more duty at destination, margin depends on buying from the plant and on documenting classification and origin before you shake hands. We covered the duty changes in our China tariff 2026 buyer guide and the origin question in our note on country of origin verification.

Protect your own product before you show it to fifty booths

If you are developing a custom item, you will show drawings, samples or a brand name to dozens of exhibitors. China still awards trademarks to the first applicant. The fifth revision of the Trademark Law passed on 26 June 2026 and takes effect on 1 January 2027. It adds fines of up to 100,000 RMB for bad-faith filings that cause negative influence. However, it also shortens the opposition window from three months to two. File in China before the fair, or at least before you hand over a sample. An NNN agreement with the exhibitor is the second layer, not the first.

After the fair: the plant visit that closes the loop

A booth conversation produces a shortlist, not a supplier. What converts one into the other is a visit to the plant with someone who can read a production floor. Does the equipment match the product? Is the headcount consistent with the claimed capacity? And is the name on the gate the same one printed on the licence? For the Canton Fair October 2026 session, the practical slots are the gaps between phases or the week after 4 November.

Frequently asked questions

When is Canton Fair October 2026 and how many phases does it have?

The 140th session runs in Guangzhou from 15 October to 4 November, split into three phases with separate product maps. Phase 1 runs from 15 to 19 October, Phase 2 from 23 to 27 October and Phase 3 from 31 October to 4 November, so Phase 1 and Phase 2 do not overlap.

Why request samples and quotations before 30 September?

Because only three working days, 28 to 30 September, separate the Mid-Autumn Festival, from 25 to 27 September, and Golden Week, from 1 to 7 October. Plants reopen on 8 October and the fair opens one week later, so after that suppliers are either on holiday or busy building their booths.

Should you close a fixed price at Canton Fair October 2026?

Not at the booth. The fair opens three weeks after the Trump-Xi summit, which CSIS dates to 24 September, and its outcome will shape how exhibitors quote. Instead, agree a price with a written review clause tied to duty changes, and add a validity period to every quotation you collect.

Why file a trademark in China before the fair?

China still awards trademarks to the first applicant. The revised Trademark Law takes effect on 1 January 2027 and shortens the opposition window from three months to two. If you will show drawings, samples or a brand name to exhibitors, file in China before the fair, or at least before you hand over a sample.

This is where BiiLinx works. The team operates from its own office in Shenzhen, so it can walk the fair with you and audit the shortlisted plants in the following days. That includes checking licences and certificates against the company on the gate, and comparing the sample with the production run before shipment. It also means sitting in the negotiation until the review clause and the payment terms are in writing. The result is a supplier you have seen with your own eyes, or with ours, before the deposit leaves your account.

Your Canton Fair October 2026 checklist for this week:

  1. Pick your phase from the table and keep the between-phase days free for plant visits.
  2. By 30 September, send appointment requests, sample requests and updated RFQs to the exhibitors on your list.
  3. Pre-register, set up the navigation tools and prepare your three booth questions.
  4. If you are developing a custom product, start the Chinese trademark filing now.
  5. Decide who will audit your shortlist after the fair. If you want that to be someone already in Guangdong, talk to BiiLinx.
