Chinese New Year 2027 Factory Shutdown: What to Lock In Before November

10 min 28

Lunar New Year 2027 falls on Saturday, February 6, eleven days earlier than in 2026. The Chinese New Year 2027 factory shutdown arrives right behind Mid-Autumn Festival, Golden Week and the three phases of the Canton Fair. As a result, the production window between the October holidays and the February stop is the shortest in years.

Freight forwarders will cover the shipping side of this squeeze. However, nobody covers the purchasing decisions for you: when to approve the sample, when to inspect, when to release the balance and when to confirm your slot on the line. Those decisions have to happen before November, and several of them before September 25.

Only three working days separate Mid-Autumn from Golden Week

The State Council fixed the 2026 holiday calendar long ago. Mid-Autumn Festival runs from September 25 to 27, and National Day runs from October 1 to 7. In addition, the notice makes Sunday, September 20 and Saturday, October 10 working days to compensate for the long break.

Between the two holidays sit exactly three working days: September 28, 29 and 30. SEKO Logistics calls this the critical final working window before Golden Week. Its guide estimates roughly 193,000 TEU of removed capacity at the peak and marks week 41 as the most constrained. It also warns that backlogs may continue into mid-October, especially for shipments delayed during that September window.

Therefore, “we will deliver after the holiday” is not a date. In this calendar it means mid-October at best. Write the actual date into the purchase order and tie the balance payment to it. Any pre-shipment inspection or sample approval that is not on the calendar before September 25 will slide into the second week of October. Every week lost now comes straight out of the runway to the Chinese New Year 2027 factory shutdown.

Canton Fair 2026 dates leave no room to develop a new supplier

MOFCOM confirmed the 140th Canton Fair in three phases: October 15 to 19, October 23 to 27 and October 31 to November 4. MOFCOM expects more than 30,000 exhibiting enterprises across 1.55 million square meters.

Phase one opens eight days after factories reopen from Golden Week. Phase three closes when a factory should already be running orders for the first quarter of 2027. So a buyer who goes to Guangzhou to find a new supplier will not produce before the Chinese New Year 2027 factory shutdown. The exception is the buyer who arrives with the audit, the specification and the sample already resolved.

In other words, the fair is the right place to negotiate the 2027 program with a shortlisted factory, and the wrong place to start from zero. Use the weeks before October 15 to verify the shortlist, so the meeting at the booth closes a decision instead of opening one.

Why the Chinese New Year 2027 factory shutdown cuts deeper this time

Three things make the Chinese New Year 2027 factory shutdown harder than the last one. First, the date. Eleven fewer days of production eat exactly the margin many buyers use for rework after a failed inspection. SEKO recommends finalizing all orders 8 to 10 weeks before the holiday, so between late November and December 2026, and starting complex products 5 to 6 months ahead.

Second, the official calendar does not exist yet. For mainland China, SEKO lists the 2027 holiday as 7 to 9 days, estimated and provisional. It expects the State Council notice in November or December 2026. Anyone planning around dates from blogs is planning around a guess. Meanwhile, the factory calendar never matches the official one exactly: lines wind down early and ramp up slowly. Ask each supplier in writing for its actual last production day and its first day at full capacity.

Third, the state of the small factory. The August manufacturing PMI from the National Bureau of Statistics rose to 49.8. Large enterprises reached 50.6, but small enterprises stayed at 47.9, still in contraction. At the same time, the purchase price index for major raw materials jumped to 56.6. Put simply, the typical supplier of a mid-sized importer is shrinking while its inputs get more expensive.

That profile carries specific risks before a long holiday: requests to bring the balance forward, unannounced subcontracting and, in the worst case, a factory that does not reopen. Demand is not the problem. Chinese exports grew 25% year on year in August, with shipments to Latin America up 17.5%. Factories enter the quarter with full order books. Consequently, a buyer without a written slot on the line before Golden Week competes for capacity against larger clients who already booked.

Why plan the inspection and the vessel booking together?

Because carriers are pulling capacity before the holiday, not after it. Drewry’s World Container Index held at $4,476 per 40ft container for a second week. More telling, carriers announced eight blank sailings on the Transpacific for the following week, up from seven, and three on Asia to Europe, up from one.

Producing on time is therefore not enough. If the booking waits until the inspection report arrives, the cargo sits on the dock while the sailing disappears. In this quarter, treat the pre-shipment inspection and the vessel booking as one event. Set the inspection date when you confirm the order and book space against that date. Then make the balance payment conditional on a passed inspection rather than on a shipping promise.

For cargo leaving in the September 28 to 30 window or in week 41, add cargo insurance and GPS tracking on the container. Both cost little compared with a container stuck at a congested terminal.

File the trademark before January 1

One more deadline runs in parallel with production. China’s revised Trademark Law takes effect on January 1, 2027. The National People’s Congress Standing Committee adopted it on June 26, 2026. Applications without an intention to use the mark will face rejection and fines of up to 100,000 yuan.

The detail that matters most for a buyer comes from the analysis by Loeb & Loeb: Article 36 shortens the opposition period from three to two months. China remains a first-to-file jurisdiction. Whoever shows a new product or brand at the Canton Fair without a Chinese application on file runs the usual risk. From January, that buyer will also have one month less to oppose a third party’s registration. File before the fair, or at least before year end. This is general information, not legal advice, so confirm the specifics with counsel licensed in China.

What should you close before November?

Inspections, written shutdown dates, supplier verification, orders, vessel space and the trademark filing. The list, in order of urgency:

  1. Before September 25: schedule every pre-shipment inspection and sample approval for goods that must ship before Golden Week. Confirm the inspector’s availability in writing.
  2. By September 30: get each supplier’s actual shutdown and reopening dates for Golden Week in writing, on the purchase order. Ask for its expected dates for the Chinese New Year 2027 factory shutdown at the same time.
  3. Before October 15: finish verifying any factory you plan to meet at the Canton Fair.
  4. By late November: place every order that must deliver before February 6, in line with the 8 to 10 week guidance. Complex or customized products should already be in development now.
  5. In parallel: book vessel space against the inspection date, insure the cargo, and file your trademark application in China before the fair.

Then hold each supplier to it: written dates, a verified slot on the line, and a balance payment that moves only when the inspection passes. The Chinese New Year 2027 factory shutdown will not move. Your dates still can.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Chinese New Year 2027 factory shutdown?

Lunar New Year 2027 falls on Saturday, February 6, eleven days earlier than in 2026. The length of the mainland holiday is not official yet: SEKO lists it as 7 to 9 days, provisional, and expects the State Council notice in November or December 2026. Factory lines also wind down early and ramp up slowly.

When should you place orders that must deliver before February 6?

By late November. SEKO recommends finalizing all orders 8 to 10 weeks before the holiday, so between late November and December 2026, and starting complex products 5 to 6 months ahead. Write the actual delivery date into each purchase order and tie the balance payment to a passed inspection.

What happens to an inspection not scheduled before September 25?

It slides into the second week of October. Only three working days, September 28, 29 and 30, separate Mid-Autumn Festival from Golden Week, so any pre-shipment inspection or sample approval that is not on the calendar before September 25 lands after the holiday, and that week comes out of the runway to February.

When should you release the balance payment?

Only against a passed inspection, not against a shipping promise. Write the actual date into the purchase order and tie the balance to it, because “we will deliver after the holiday” is not a date: in this calendar it means mid-October at best.

Why file a trademark in China before the Canton Fair?

China remains a first-to-file jurisdiction, and the revised Trademark Law, in effect from January 1, 2027, shortens the opposition period from three to two months. Whoever shows a new product or brand at the fair without a Chinese application on file runs the usual risk, with one month less to oppose a third party’s registration.

BiiLinx runs its own team and offices in Shenzhen. That means someone from the group can walk into the plant and confirm that your order is actually on the line ahead of the Chinese New Year 2027 factory shutdown. The same team can run the inspection in the September window and sit beside you when a supplier asks for money early. If your fourth quarter depends on a factory you have never visited, this is the quarter to change that. See our sourcing and inspection services or contact the team with your Q4 order list.
